destroyed

We had the most traumatic weekend I think that I have ever experienced. The plan was to visit family- hang out, have dinner, visit a farm but it all went terribly wrong. Skelly was sleeping in the adjacent art studio when the wood stove caught on fire and the entire room went up in flames. We were all in the kitchen putting away dinner when I noticed that the volume line on the baby monitor was moving. I commented that the wood was crackling really loudly and would probably wake Skelly up. I saw that he was stirring when I noticed small flashes across the screen. I asked J to check and he left. Suddenly I heard "FIRE" and we all ran to the door. J was coming out of the burning building holding a startled Skelly. He grabbed me and put Skelly into my arms. He was so hot and smelled of smoke. We watched as the flames leaped out of the windows and B. called 911. The house we were visiting was on a steep hill and as neighbors came to see what was happening one truck started to slide off the road. The girl in the back started screaming, "get me out"!. It was a nightmare of epic proportions. J and I took Skelly to be checked out by the EMT's who said that he sounded fine despite his asthsma. I cradled my sweet baby in the cold as I waited in my brothers car. Skelly is doing fine now. He did develop a cough and we took him to the ER this morning. J has been broken about it. He is the one who saw our baby standing in his crib surrounded by flames and can't forget that image. I don't know that he will ever be able to. Thank god for the video monitor and my sister in law sharing my opinion that the flashes seemed suspicous. I know that Skelly has some amazing angels watching over him.
I unpacked our bags that we took from the building today. I saw my baby's blanket burned with a blackened stick, the satin lining stuck to the ashes. Skelly's diaper bag was filled with ash and soaked through from the fire hoses and I picked glass and insulation out of my baby's tiny pants and shirts. I am incredibly grateful that it was just things that were lost tonight. My cousin's girlfriends beautiful artwork was also destroyed in the fire and I mourn those beautiful images that have been burned away. What a horrific nightmare that I pray we can all move on from.....Here are a few pics that she took of the damage. It is terrifying. I am incredibly grateful for our Summer video monitor. It saved my baby's life that night.

Mr. One-derful!

Dear Skelly,

You are ONE. How in the world did that happen? This year has flown by amazingly fast and somehow you became this almost walking and trying to talk one year old. Your birthday was a smashing success and you loved seeing everyone.
Today you are almost walking- I think your record is about 5-6 steps You get so excited about this forward movement that you fall down. You love to clap and dance and are thrilled when anyone cheers for you which is often. You say Mama, Dada and this indescriminately and are really trying so hard to talk and say what you want. You are however, completely uninterested in sign language despite Momma's efforts.
We have just started back at school which is why this post is being written in two parts. I did begin this the day after your birthday but am now just finishing. Sorry buddy, this is going to be a long school year. Speaking of which, you have also developed a bit of separation anxiety forcing me to sneak out of the room at daycare. The other day I left you to play on the playground with your other friends and had to do a mad dash across the playground so that you would not see me leaving. I don't know if this is the right thing to do, but it just about breaks my heart to hear you cry as you notice me leaving. You are thrilled to see Doris again and all your school friends. Apparently you are already the class clown and led all of the children in a cup banging revolt at the snack table the other day. Silly boy and definitely your father's son.
Oh my sweet sweet boy I love you so. This year has flown by so fast and I am constantly being amazed at all of your achievements. You are growing up to be such a fabulous little person and we love you so!

Here's to another year!
Love,
Momma

A note to self......

do not take family pictures while teething....notice the death stare from Skelly.....

Eleven Months

Dear Skelly,
I cannot believe it has happened but you are now ELEVEN MONTHS OLD!!! This year has flown by and I am already thinking about your birthday party. We celebrated your eleven month old birthday yesterday by giving you your first taste of cows milk. Needless to say you were unimpressed. You are drinking from a straw sippy cup and loving it. Most of the time you seem surprised that something comes up and spit it out but feel like such a big boy to be doing it. Momma is happy and sad that this will be the end of breastfeeding. You have four full teeth and many coming in which is partly why Momma is ready to give you a cup now. :) Your new favorite food is blueberries. You ate a pint in 3 days! You love meat and beans and picking tomatoes from the garden. I cannot think of a food you do not like because you seem to be a eating machine lately.
Your big milestones are that you are cruising on everything and climbing stairs like a champion. You love to grab the gate at the stairs and scream and laugh hysterically. Dada just put up your swing in the backyard and we spend lots of time out there everyday. Momma is going to have one strong right arm from pushing you. You laugh like crazy when Dada swings you and pretends to let you hit him. The other day Uncle Butch came out of his house because he heard you laughing so loudly. Your Uncle Jerry also loves you so much. He is fascinated by everything you do and loves to tell everyone who visits exactly what you can do.
You just decided to start standing on your chair and think that is very funny too. You love the gym and have mastered climbing through tunnels, bouncing on the trampoline and crawling uphill on the wedge mats. Your favorite time is the dance party at the end where they turn on the disco ball and bubbles. You have become quite the dancer and stand up and shake your booty whenever you hear a Wiggles song. Your favorite is hot potato, Momma's is bears and Dada's is fruit salad. It is even the ringtone for when Dada calls.
You love to be naked and hate to have your diaper changed. It has become quite the battle to have you on the changing table. You are going to be sad when winter comes and you can no longer race around the house with your little naked bum hanging out.
We are leaving tomorrow for Massachusetts and I am so excited to take you to the beach. I cannot wait to see you crawl in the sand (and eat it I'm sure) and see waves for the first time!
Oh, my big boy I cannot believe how grown up you are. This summer has been an amazing blessing to spend with you. You have grown so much and we are amazed by you every day.
We love you with all of our hearts.
Momma and Dada.
