destroyed

We had the most traumatic weekend I think that I have ever experienced. The plan was to visit family- hang out, have dinner, visit a farm but it all went terribly wrong. Skelly was sleeping in the adjacent art studio when the wood stove caught on fire and the entire room went up in flames. We were all in the kitchen putting away dinner when I noticed that the volume line on the baby monitor was moving. I commented that the wood was crackling really loudly and would probably wake Skelly up. I saw that he was stirring when I noticed small flashes across the screen. I asked J to check and he left. Suddenly I heard "FIRE" and we all ran to the door. J was coming out of the burning building holding a startled Skelly. He grabbed me and put Skelly into my arms. He was so hot and smelled of smoke. We watched as the flames leaped out of the windows and B. called 911. The house we were visiting was on a steep hill and as neighbors came to see what was happening one truck started to slide off the road. The girl in the back started screaming, "get me out"!. It was a nightmare of epic proportions. J and I took Skelly to be checked out by the EMT's who said that he sounded fine despite his asthsma. I cradled my sweet baby in the cold as I waited in my brothers car. Skelly is doing fine now. He did develop a cough and we took him to the ER this morning. J has been broken about it. He is the one who saw our baby standing in his crib surrounded by flames and can't forget that image. I don't know that he will ever be able to. Thank god for the video monitor and my sister in law sharing my opinion that the flashes seemed suspicous. I know that Skelly has some amazing angels watching over him.
I unpacked our bags that we took from the building today. I saw my baby's blanket burned with a blackened stick, the satin lining stuck to the ashes. Skelly's diaper bag was filled with ash and soaked through from the fire hoses and I picked glass and insulation out of my baby's tiny pants and shirts. I am incredibly grateful that it was just things that were lost tonight. My cousin's girlfriends beautiful artwork was also destroyed in the fire and I mourn those beautiful images that have been burned away. What a horrific nightmare that I pray we can all move on from.....Here are a few pics that she took of the damage. It is terrifying. I am incredibly grateful for our Summer video monitor. It saved my baby's life that night.
